It’s only been a couple of years since yeule released softscars — an ode to finding “beauty in the relics of imperfection.” During that time, the glitch-pop musician listened to Avril Lavigne, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Pixies on cassette, which swayed their soul-baring sound and aesthetic.
With their new album, Evangelic Girl is a Gun (out May 30 via Ninja Tune), however, yeule tapped into their work as a painter. Specifically, they looked toward Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński, whose intense, surrealistic drawings often resembled nightmares, and explored “the tortured artist trapped within an image.” yeule says, “I wanted to bring homage to my life as a painter with this album. For me, Beksiński portrays so beautifully, with utmost care, the entities that crawl through his dystopian, tranquil landscapes. The nature of painting as a medium is a reflection of my emotions, both violent and gentle. A fleeting moment of time in my life, transcribed with paint and trapped in time.”
