Earlier this year, the Sound of Animals Fighting announced a fall tour with support from This Will Destroy You and the Casket Lottery, as well as Hard Chiller and Soft Blue Shimmer on select dates. Today, the experimental post-hardcore supergroup — featuring Anthony Green, members of RX Bandits, and more — announced their new album, The Maiden (their first in 17 years). It’s out Sept. 12 via Born Losers Records, and they shared lead single “Lady of the Cosmos.”
The follow-up to 2022’s Apeshit EP comes with a video directed by Daniel Rosendale, featuring the titular Lady of the Cosmos against different backdrops, including a tattoo shop, cemetery, and Ortlieb’s in Philly. Toward the end, she’s doused in blood. Live footage of Green is interpolated, appearing like a dispatch from the future.

Of the new song, the band say, “‘Lady of the Cosmos’ marks the emotional and narrative pivot point of The Maiden — a mythic journey through revolution, transcendence, and memory. At the heart of this track lies the maiden, the album’s central figure, who meets her prophesied fate at the blade of the guillotine. As her physical form is severed, her spirit ascends, untethered, spiraling into the cosmos. It is here — at the edge of death and eternity — that Side A ends. The second half of the album begins where she reawakens: no longer flesh, but memory itself, echoing through the celestial collective that binds all things. We wanted to pinpoint the juxtaposition of that which is haunting, beautiful, and brutally serene. ‘Lady of the Cosmos’ is the hinge between mortality and myth.”
