A decade after their last full-length, Motion City Soundtrack released The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, out today. The album charts the journey the band have had over the last 10 years, almost like an amalgamation of what initially inspired them to make music together. “When we started conceptualizing the idea for this record, I was thinking about what we loved about doing this originally,” guitarist Joshua Cain explains.
The record features a collaboration with Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump for “Particle Physics,” which Stump co-wrote with the band. The partially animated video, directed by David Prindle and shot by Jesse Cain, features Stump alongside caricatures of the Motion City Soundtrack band members. It’s the first official collaboration between Stump and MCS since he provided backing vocals on “Everything Is Alright” from their second album, Commit This to Memory. Stump also joined the band to perform the song last year at When We Were Young.

“We met Patrick in the early days of Fall Out Boy and had more recently talked about having him contribute to this album,” Cain says of the collaboration. “He told us he had an idea running through his head about a song Motion City Soundtrack would have written but haven’t written yet. It was this little riff and chorus to ‘Particle Physics,’ and even though it was just part of the song, the vibe was completely there.”
In addition to Strump’s feature, the LP also includes a song with Citizen’s lead singer Mat Kerekes on “Your Days Are Numbered” and “Things Like This” with Sincere Engineer. Following the album’s release, this fall the band will hit the road with Say Anything across America for their first tour together in almost 15 years.
