Lorde has been teasing the follow-up to 2021’s Solar Power for a while now, and she’s now officially announced Virgin, due out on June 27 via Universal. Here’s what she has to say about it:
THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR. LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL. THE SOUNDS ARE THE SAME WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC.
I’M PROUD AND SCARED OF THIS ALBUM. THERE’S NOWHERE TO HIDE. I BELIEVE THAT PUTTING THE DEEPEST PARTS OF OURSELVES TO MUSIC IS WHAT SETS US FREE.

Lorde co-produced the album with Jim-E Stack, and it was mixed by Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst and mastered by Chris Gehringer. Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Devonté Hynes also feature on it, and while she hasn’t revealed the full tracklist yet, you can see the cover art below.
The announcement of Virgin follows the release of Lorde’s new single “What Was That” last week. She teased the song with a video clip at the beginning of April, and announced a Washington Square Park event for it on social media that wound up getting shut down by police. Hours later, she did make an appearance there, though, and that footage became part of the video for the track, which you can watch below.
