Baltimore hardcore crew Jivebomb will unleash their debut album, Ethereal, next month, and they’ve shared another brutal preview with “ESTRELA.”
While only a minute and 15 seconds, the song quickly revvs up into a blistering thrash. Vocalist Kat Madeira delivers impressive growls as she sings of breaking away from “the old me,” which unexpectedly pulls influence from swing jazz legend Billie Holiday and her 1941 cover of “Gloomy Sunday.” “This song has been written (lyrically) for a while, and I was on a heavy Billie Holiday kick at the time,” Madeira says. “She has a devastating song where she says, ‘Angels have no thoughts of ever returning you — would they be angry if I thought of joining you?’ so there’s an ode to that in ‘ESTRELA.’ Letting a past self die in order to grow, rather than being complacent in your shit life.”

The accompanying visual documents their vicious live energy, including stage dives, circle pits, and spraying beer on the crowd. It was directed by Noah Haycock, with help from James Carline, Rob Silverstein, and Greyson Pearce. Their new album was recorded with Uniform’s Ben Greenberg at Circular Ruin in NYC and arrives March 28 via Flatspot Records.
