Fusilier, the project of NYC-bred musician Blake Fusilier that blends alt-rock, punk, and R&B, has announced his debut album, Ambush, which arrives March 28 via Is Not Music.
“When I started Ambush, I thought it was something I was doing — bombarding the world with a bunch of world-changing songs,” Fusilier says in the album’s bio. “The more I thought about it and fleshed it out, the more I realized that it was something being done to me every day, from seemingly innocent advertisements to full-on macro aggressions.” The LP was hugely collaborative, forged in “so many places by so many people,” including Chris Connors, Carlos Hernandez (Carlos Truly), Teeny Lieberson (Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory), and Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim).

Featuring 11 tracks, his mutant sound seems to take cues from Yves Tumor, Juice WRLD, and L’Rain, which you can hear in the new song “Nightmare Muscle.” It includes synths/background vocals by Connors and guitar from Bartees Strange — a genre-fluid peer who Fusilier credits for transforming the album “into such a cohesive, potent statement.” The song’s core — the ability to survive the heaviness of the world — comes alive in a video featuring a cameraman’s POV, chasing Fusilier through the streets of NYC but never quite catching up. “It takes a special kind of strength not to waste away into nothing given the horrors of the world and the horrors of our aging bodies and minds,” he says.
