Ever since dropping out of school at 15 to release music, DeathbyRomy has tapped into an alluring blend of pop, goth rock, and trap. But she’s never forgotten the city that shaped her, fixating on the endless contradictions that make Los Angeles such an “inspiring and brutal” place to live for her debut full-length.
On April 25, DeathbyRomy will release Hollywood Forever, via ONErpm, which borrows its name from the 126-year-old cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard. Calling the album a love letter to the city, DeathbyRomy’s latest single, “LA LA LAND,” turns away from what’s come before. “It teases a more cohesive heavy dance sound that is intertwined throughout the whole album and hasn’t been done before by me,” she tells us. Dark and fast-paced, the track skewers the toxic parts of LA culture, pointing out all the fake friends and fake numbers. The video, premiering with AP, invites us into the city, following a young hitchhiker who winds up at a packed house party. As the night unfurls, reality morphs into a dizzy altered state, guided by a sunglassed stranger with a bloody X on her face, known as “The Manager.”

“This song is about being drained by the superficial hamster wheel that is LA ‘culture.’ The inescapable who’s who and ‘Why do you matter?’ ‘What can you do for me?’ Attitude that pollutes all social relationships and interactions,” she adds.
