As Knocked Loose proved last year, hardcore just makes for good late-night TV. Santa Cruz outfit Scowl are certainly stretching beyond that descriptor, but they’re the latest group within that space to make it onto mainstream airwaves, appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night for their television debut.
Less than a week on from the release of their sophomore album, Scowl played their Are We All Angels single “Tonight (I’m Afraid).” Naturally, they blazed through the performance, flexing melodious pop hooks, alt-rock fuzz, and an array of screamed-and-sung moments from vocalist Kat Moss.

“Tonight (I’m Afraid)” was originally released in March along with a flipbook animation-style music video put together by Adult Swim’s Adam Fuchs. It features cartoony avatars of Scowl boppin’ around to their song — until a shadowy beast starts decapitating the punk crew. Fortunately, there were no beheadings last night, though they did deliver a characteristically ferocious performance.
Following the release of Are We All Angels through their new label home Dead Oceans, Scowl will play a record release show at NYC’s Night Club 101 tomorrow (April 11). They also have a headline tour of Europe and the U.K. on deck for May and then a U.S. tour in July. Find their upcoming shows here.
