Four years after their last album, Lowertown have announced Ugly Duckling Union, out May 22 via Summer Shade. After a grueling touring schedule, leaving their label, and a codependent attachment to each other, Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg had to go back to basics when recording their new record.
Upon returning to Atlanta and immersing themselves in the life they once lived there, Lowertown looked at the digital communities that had shaped their work, from Tumblr fan pages to Reddit forums, and how those would eventually unite in physical spaces, like concerts.

As those spaces began to slip away due to the pandemic, Lowertown found inspiration in the communal collective experience of going to a show. Ugly Duckling Union represents a conceptual world of a duckling named Dale and his friends trying to defeat a media conglomerate that’s attempting to isolate people from each other.
The LP’s lead single, “I Like You A Lot,” out today, explores the hope of a new crush and the obsessive feelings that come from fantasizing about them. “Loving someone without yet knowing them, and being filled with the idea of the potential time spent together,” the band say. “This thinking can become obsessive and compulsive, almost like a sickness taking over the body, but maybe not in a particularly bad way. It is also about the insecurity and the uncertainty about these feelings being reciprocated or unreciprocated.”
