Kim Gordon Play Me

Kim Gordon has announced her third solo album, Play Me, out March 13 via Matador Records. PLAY ME was produced by longtime collaborator Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira) and was crafted to broaden Gordon’s sonic palette.

“We wanted the songs to be short,” Gordon says. “We wanted to do it really fast. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics, and he understands how I work — that came forth even more on this record.”

Alongside the album announcement is “NOT TODAY,” a track that drifts on distorted guitars before Gordon’s unmistakable vocals surface. “I started singing in a way I hadn’t sung in a long time,” she says. “This other voice came out.”

The track includes a short film directed by Rodarte designers and filmmakers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, known for their avant-garde, feminine designs and vision. The film shows Gordon frolicking around a house in a dress that was custom-made for her by the Mulleavys. “She was our idol, and we vividly remember fitting the dress with her in NYC,” they say. “When we started to conceptualize the video, Kim brought up wearing the dress, which we knew was perfect for the video idea.”
