Vans and Trust Records have released Intense Energy: The Sounds of Skateboarding, a short film directed by Coan Buddy Nichols. The connection between skateboarding and underground music is explored in the 22-minute doc, which includes skateboard legends like Steve Olson, Tony Alva, and Steve Caballero from the ‘80s and Mike Carroll and Eli Morgan Gesner from the ‘90s. The doc also highlights skaters of today, Beatrice Domond and Atiba Jefferson.
Intense Energy: The Sounds of Skateboarding traces skate-rock’s roots, highlighting anecdotes about skaters’ musical tastes and experiences. The documentary also looks at hip-hop’s influence on skate culture in the late ’80s and ’90s. With music being an integral aspect, the doc features interviews with artists like Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, Ray Barbee, Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam, and Ian MacKaye.

On Nov. 21, Vans Skate Space 198 will host a screening and a free show with performances by Somerset Thrower, Spin, and DJ Marc Sinclair. In the meantime, check out Intense Energy: The Sounds of Skateboarding below.
