Hot Mulligan’s last album dealt in contrast, wading through generational trauma, self-hatred, and regret with goofy humor. The Michigan emo band will tread a similar path with their next record, The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still, which arrives Aug. 22 via Wax Bodega.
“This album is our most ambitious and cohesive project to date,” rhythm guitarist Chris Freeman tells AP. “Thematically, it is our darkest. We’ve further refined and expanded on our sound to put together 16 tracks we’re all very proud of — something we wouldn’t have been capable of pulling off until now.”

Despite its title, that murk consumes their new song “And A Big Load,” which captures “the consequences of your own actions. You could face them, [or] you could avoid them entirely,” Freeman continues. “Our biggest conflicts and struggles are often self-inflicted… At the end of the day, it’ll all be left for you to deal with. It’s terrifying.”
