Honeycrush is the solo project of NYC singer-songwriter and poet Alexandra Antonopoulos, whose powerful, sultry storytelling falls somewhere between alternative, dream pop, and indie rock. Citing Nirvana, PJ Harvey, and Jeff Buckley as her guides, Antonopoulos writes and records with a similar emotional rawness. Backed by a four-piece band, she just released her new Dogwoods EP — a collection of songs that contemplate how discarded memories can resurface — which she’ll celebrate with a show at Bar Freda in Brooklyn on Saturday.
“I’m very interested in themes and images or symbols that repeat, especially throughout your life or across generations in a family line,” Antonopoulos tells AP. “All of the events in Dogwoods were inspired by versions of myself that I’ve shed, or wished I could shed, or a version of myself that I might have gotten mixed up with someone else. ‘Was that my mother, or was that me?’ It’s about how time sometimes clarifies truth and other times distorts it.” The result is potent, flush with ambition, self-discovery, and a desire to break cycles while sifting through the seasons.

“Some of these songs are raw on a level that’s embarrassing, but I really love testing the limits of my ability to be vulnerable as a songwriter,” she continues. “It’s always more interesting to me to expose bad habits and find my own culpability than to avoid those parts of myself. I think a lot of what I write borders on punishment because of that. Or maybe it’s another a way to hide; to put what you believe to be the worst of yourself out there so no one can hurt you.”
