It’s been six years since Greet Death released 2019’s New Hell, but they’re back with a reconfigured lineup, fresh music, and a change in perspective. Their next album, Die in Love, arrives on June 27 via Deathwish Inc.
The LP was recorded in Harper Boyhtari’s parents’ basement in Davisburg, Michigan, where she and fellow vocalist/guitarist Logan Gaval spent their younger days. There, they covered blink-182 and wrote songs, eventually converging upon the doomy shoegaze that made good on their name. But while their earlier records embraced darker headspaces, Die In Love contends with loss as certainty, so it’s best to express love whenever you can. “At the end of the day, we’re lucky to lose people we care about,” Gaval says.

They’ve also shared the towering, fuzzed-out “Country Girl” — a song that tackles “identity, alienation, and detachment. It’s like trying to solve a murder mystery and finding out you were the killer the whole time,” Boyhtari says. It references Halloween, The Fog, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, so naturally its video looks like it could live within A24’s horror catalog.
“I feel like my big song on the record [“Country Girl”] is more of an internal reflection about self-love… It’s an internal exploration examining, like, ‘Why do you feel so alienated? Why am I struggling to connect with so many people on every level, romantically and otherwise, and it’s just not working, and I’m not happy.’ That song ended up meaning more to me than I thought it ever would, but it took a minute,” Boyhtari told Stereogum, explaining that she came out as trans before recording Die In Love.
