Back in February, Green Day revealed that they have a film, New Years Rev, in the works, and they’ve unveiled the first trailer. It’s set to American Idiot track “Holiday” and includes glimpses of road trip hijinks as a fictional garage band, the Analog Dogs, try to make what they think is an opening slot for Green Day, but turns out to be just a prank.
Green Day call the coming-of-age comedy “the story of three young punks willing to risk it all to follow their dream,” and say it’s their “love letter to road trip movies, ’90s nostalgia, and chasing the dream no matter how ridiculous it gets.”

“Van days rule,” Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement. “You will drive all night on no sleep, then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”
Here’s the official synopsis:
New Years Rev is a coming-of-age story about three friends — played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust — who journey to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Years Eve. Their roadtrip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.
Along with Thames, Coffman, and Foust, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Bobby Lee, and the Paradox all appear in New Year’s Rev, as do Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool of Green Day, and a bunch of their songs. It premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sept. 12, and it’s co-produced by Green Day and Live Nation Productions.
