Free Throw have announced their upcoming album Moments Before The Wind, out March 27 via Wax Bodega. Capturing a time of disarray in vocalist/guitarist Cory Castro’s life, Moments Before The Wind explores everything from a breakdown of a long-term partnership to the sudden news that he was going to be a father.
Its title is taken from House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, which is derived from a section that compares life to something that can be easily broken down and reassembled to create something unrecognizable.
“There was a lot to write about this time around, but getting over that threshold definitely took some time,” Castro says. “We tend to write albums that have a conceptual arc to them, but you just sort of have to let the songs reveal themselves and figure out what that actually is. When I got the call that I was going to be a dad, I immediately knew what song I was going to write. It just felt right.”

Coinciding with the LP announcement is Moments Before The Wind’s lead single, “A Hero’s Grave,” a song that sets a swooping guitar riff and ’90s groove against Castro’s vocals, fueled by the feeling of writing it on the fly.
Their sixth album was recorded with longtime collaborator Brett Romnes between Free Throw’s busy schedule, which includes tours with Hot Mulligan and New Found Glory. “The record has this theme of liminality — not just as a place, but in your mind,” Castro says. “It’s like being stuck in a doorframe or a long hallway that never ends.”
