ethel cain willoughby tucker i will always love you release date

Earlier this year, Ethel Cain dipped into ambient, slowcore, and drone on her 90-minute project Perverts. Now she’s gearing up to release Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, her second album and a prequel to 2022’s Preacher’s Daughter, in August.

At home with penning epics, Cain has said that Preacher’s Daughter was only the first of a trilogy about three generations of a family, spinning a cautionary tale about the inability to break cycles and letting things spiral to “almost a ruinous point.” “A common theme that I like to write about is intergenerational trauma,” she explained in 2022. “Things that have been passed down through generations and how your parents’ or your grandparents’ actions can affect you. It’s very much about this lineage of women and how all their lives interconnect. Each album focuses on a different woman. I want to explore how your actions affect others — and the relationship between a mother and her child and how things come full circle.”

Cain also unveiled a huge tour to support the album, which begins in North America throughout August and September. Then she’ll jump over to Europe and the U.K. in October and November. She will be joined by Toronto shoegaze outfit 9million, fronted by her longtime collaborator Matthew Tomasi.

Preacher’s Daughter is available on vinyl for the first time on April 4, which you can preorder in the AP Shop. In the meantime, check out the artwork and 2025 tour dates below.
