Chappell Roan originally debuted “The Giver” as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live while wearing hand-painted pink gingham and cowboy boots last November. Four months later, she’s officially shared her new gay country song.
Produced by Dan Nigro, “The Giver” comes alongside a retro-inspired lyric video, where Roan spoofs those hilariously bad personal injury billboards and late-night advertisements while promising to “get the job done.” In regard to genre, she urges that her new song doesn’t suggest a pivot into the country space for good. “I wrote a country song not to invade country music, but to really capture what I think the essence of country music is for me, which is nostalgia, fun in the summertime, the fiddle, and the banjo feeling like country queen,” she told the Country Heat Weekly podcast earlier this week. “It makes me feel a certain type of freedom that pop music doesn’t let me feel.”

“I have such a special place in my heart for country music,” Roan continues in a press statement. “I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus and had it swirling around me at bonfires, grocery stores, and karaoke bars. Many people have asked if this means I’m making a country album??? My answer is… right now I’m just making songs that make me feel happy and fun, and ‘The Giver’ is my take on cuntry xoxo may the classic country divas lead their genre. I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for y’all.”
